Kugler: “Human rights are the foundation of social coexistence in an enlightened world”
Russia’s withdrawal from the European Anti-Torture Convention marks another setback and sends a devastating signal for international human rights protection
“Human rights are the foundation of social coexistence in an enlightened world. As the Austrian People’s Party, we view with great concern Russia’s decision to withdraw from the European Anti-Torture Convention. This step represents a departure from the principle that the prohibition of torture must remain an absolute and inviolable standard governing state conduct,” emphasises Gudrun Kugler, Member of the Austrian Parliament for the Austrian People’s Party (ÖVP), and vice-president of the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly.
She concludes: “Human dignity and freedom are at the heart of Christian-social policy. The fundamental rights and civil liberties that flow from these principles are among the most important lessons drawn from the shared history of Europe and Russia. In the interests of the Russian people affected by this decision, too, we regret that Russia’s political leadership in Moscow is moving yet another step away from the shared values that have been hard-won over generations.”
